Bringing Your Golf Scores To Life Part 9

"Air Means Distance!"

This is a tip that I really had to work on. It's one of those cases where knowing is a lot easier than actually doing.

See, a ball in the air goes a lot farther than a ball that is driven in a line. You want to get the ball up so it goes farther.

As I stated earlier, I had a problem with getting my shots up in the air. This of course, made it difficult to get any kind of distance and to go over any kind of hazards. Course management was an extremely important aspect of my game!

I tried everything to get a little lift in the ball. I went to a shorter club and actually tried to lift the ball with a little twist of my hands.

That's a big no-no.

Instead of letting the club handle the loft, I was grabbing the club too tight, had an extreme slice and only got the ball about 60 yards away from the tee.

This is why a loose grip and smooth, fluid motion, letting the club handle all the work instead of your mind is so important.

I went to a seven iron for the longest time just to get my drive down to where the ball was lofting in the air everytime. Then went to a little longer club for more distance.

Also consider this. You have a short drive to the green, but there is a water hazard on one side of the fairway and a sand bunker a little farther up on the other. You have a small area in which to land the ball. A line drive shot would have to land perfectly between the two or you risk a penalty stroke.

But, a shot that flies over one of them, while completely disregarding the other will put you in a position to better make a wedge shot onto the green into good putting position.

Air equals distance but it also means a considerable reduction in your overall score.
